Rapid Prototyping (RP) is the manufacture of three-dimensional
solid models in a suitable material from CAD data. Models can be made
directly from CAD data using a variety of methods including the laser
based Stereolithography (SLA) and Selection Laser Sintering (SLS). With
these methods, we can provide resin models that can be used for design
verification and interpretation. Other benefits that can be obtained
from a visual model include easier quoting, die design, and CMM inspection
programming.
Tritech Precision Products In-House capability utilises
a 3D systems Thermoject wax printing machine, producing models for the
production of rapid prototype castings.
For larger components Tritech would subcontract the SLA pattern to an
independent bureau.
For information regarding tolerances of rapid prototyping
castings please refer to tolerances stated in the Technical
Information section and allow for a factor of x1.5
| By producing cast product the full benefits of
RP can be harnessed:-
- The lead time for the first off casting is drastically
reduced, as the lead time for tooling production is eliminated.
- Product for initial testing purposes are therefore
provided quickly.
- Any design changes required after initial testing
can quickly be incorporated and further castings produced, again
without hard tooling needing to be produced or modified.
- Initial production can be produced by this route,
where timescale's are tight, while the production tooling is
being built.
- Short run production can also be accommodated,
where the quantity required does not justify hard tooling.
- Both Solidification Simulation and Rapid Prototyping
processes are invaluable when combined with Concurrent Engineering.
By working closely together with the client from the earliest
stages of design, Tritech engineers can ensure that the part
has been designed for manufacturability.
